Chemo #7 and the Avastin Controversy

I had Flash remove the Avastin from today’s work order — I want to see what the FDA does about disproving Avastin to treat metastatic breast cancer. My reasons for this are long and more involved that I want to blog about, but here’s a hint: Avastin is high-priced, and if I lose the protection of Medicare, since it would then become an off-label drug in the case of breast cancer which I can’t come close to affording, its better from my POV to not start another round.

My tumor marker numbers shrunk nicely this month on the Taxol/Avastin protocol, and I think most of it is due to the Taxol.

Flash indicates there are some other drugs we can try as well that would fit my condition, should Taxol not be enough, so as long as I have doors to open, I can move away from the Avastin (though I confess, I tolerate it well).

The Washington Post ran a very good article by Rob Stein on 8/16/2010 on the whole issue entitled “FDA considers revoking approval of Avastin for advanced breast cancer” —

and there will be more research articles appearing no doubt before the decision comes down on 9/17. I’ll be watching.

Todays chemo consisted of Taxol and Zometa and went smoothly. Nurse Barb got the IV in two — I stayed hydrated yesterday and last night, and it helps, folks. You have an IV coming up? Do yourself a favor and stay hydrated, no caffiene or anything consumed that will work against you.

Flash, I’m delighted to say, will be at our clinic MWF until Dec., so I’m back on a schedule where I can see him — Friday.

Will jot down more notes as they occur to me.
