Governing by the Numbers: The Promise of Data-Driven Policymaking in the Information Age

  • Sounds great, but there is at least one phenomenon that tends to reinforce the status quo and that may prevent us from ever realizing this promise: Only a tiny proportion of voters, and an even tinier proportion of elected officials, have the wherewithal to understand the data in order to form policy accordingly.
  • So without some method of bootstrapping our ignorant and politically corrupt society back to the condition of being able to govern itself on the basis of fact rather than ideology, it’s hard to imagine any kind of change.
