Khaled Diab: Seeing through the climate change hot air

  • It would be great if people could see the big picture and realize that having a sustainable planetary home for humanity is what all environmental issues ultimately boil down to.

  • There are a number of factors that make it highly unlikely that very many people will ever see the big picture of sustainability:
    • the news media, when objective, operate in terms of newsworthiness; by definition, there’s nothing newsworthy about the big picture
    • most people with above-average education and intelligence have been brainwashed into believing that only through intense specialization can they make a difference; but the more specialized your knowledge and engagement, the less likely it is that you’re going to be able to see the big picture
    • the tiny voices of those who do see the big picture are likely to be drowned out by the brainwashed masses of specialists, or simply ignored as too “diffuse” and “impractical”
  • One of my hopes for this blog is that it can cut across areas of specialization, looking at the big picture of sustainability from many angles, and that it can do so by pointing to concrete, practical points of engagement in order to avoid the apparently lethal epithet of impractical tree-huggy stuff.
