Hi-tech is turning us all into time-wasters

  • In order for concepts such as “time-wasting” and “procrastination” to have any kind of coherent meaning, it’s necessary to have a way to assign value to every person’s time.
  • So, who’s in charge of doing that bit of mind control on behalf of the rest of humanity?
  • I think individuals are solely responsible for how they use their time. If they choose to chat with friends instead of contributing more directly to their employer’s wealth and thereby to GDP, then that is a choice they must be allowed to make. Certain consequences of this behavior are then a choice that the employer must be allowed to make. But this is just about the business of living, the minute-to-minute juggling of priorities. It is not about the clinical psychology of “deviant” behavior.
  • “Procrastination” is no more a clinical disorder than “exploitation of subordinates”.
